During the first day of sleep away camp each camper will have a head lice screening. Each camp manages campers identified with head lice differently. I have worked with families who have had to pick up their children and have the head lice removed at Lice Be Gone. Some camps send campers home and won’t allow them back for a week (makes no sense to me since after just one proper treatment we remove everything and that person is no longer contagious). Some camps will remove the head lice and nits at the camp and may send the family a bill. Regardless of how it is managed, the child is excluded from their group and usually feels really bad!
One way to avoid your child possibly going to camp with head lice is to have them properly checked before going to camp. At Lice Be Gone, we do a thorough screening and if lice is detected we remove each and every nit and bug so that when a child gets to camp they can avoid any issue of having lice or nits found. While most campers that come to Lice Be Gone for “pre-camp screenings” don’t have lice, it relieves the anxiety that kids feel waiting to be screened that first day of camp.
